Dear Reader
The dictionary meaning of the word 'travel' means 'moving from one place to another, typically over a distance, be successfully away from the place of origin' etc. Actually, it is not such a banal activity either. On the other hand, I believe that even thinking about 'Travel' could excite our lives. I am talking of travel of every kind-- professional, personal or just for fun. Also, irrespective of the experience that befalls you on this travel, looking back on it, it could bring a unique satisfaction that is different from the satisfaction that one can derive from many other activities. So I believe that it is one of the most enigmatic words uttered in any part of the world! And I can easily imagine it!! the excitement of going to a different place, hopefully meeting interesting people, being part of a new culture even when it is for a short time and my favourite reason to travel is that I get to meet a 'new me'!!
Wondering why I am talking so much about travelling now?😀😎It is yet another occasion to celebrate travel of a very different kind. Dear all, Deepavali 🔆🔆that wonderful Festival of Light celebrates the journey from darkness to light, ignorance to knowledge, and misery to bliss!!
However, on this divine occasion of embarking on an auspicious journey, I would like to share yet another unique aspect of travel, a divergent act that our ancestors took and here we are today!!
To begin with, and as an exciting factual beginning, thinking of the tectonic shift gives us the present geography; the caveman emerging from the caves to build a home on a plateau, to create villages, towns, and cities; the tribes moving from one place to another in search of warm weather conditions to rise the amazing civilizations of the world-- that is some 'bar of expectations that our ancestors set for the future generations to raise and rise up to!!
After the establishment and disappearance of ancient civilizations, begins yet another new journey--of exploring the world beyond their own places, exploring and experiencing new cultures, and chronicling their travel. Be it Al-Biruni, who was commissioned by Mahmud of Ghazni, came to India along with him as a traveller and wrote 'Indica' around the 12th Century or Xuanzang who is better known as Huen-Tsang a great scholar of the 7th Century who came to India from China who translated some six-hundred and odd Buddhist texts in Sanskrit; Amir Khusro (13th-14th Century) of Turkish origin but was also an Indian as his mother was an Indian, the poet-scholar who wrote Nuh-Siphir (1318, translated into English as 'India as seen by Amir Khusro') or Suleiman Charitra, a Biblical tale retold by a Sanskrit Scholar Kalyana Malla for his King Lad Khan.
For the time being, let us leave out 'colonial transactions' because this is quite the dark side of travel and more importantly, this requires at least three or four posts--just think of slave narratives, Dalit writings, diasporic writing and travelogues that present yet another perspective of travel. . .
For now, let's say three cheers to celebrate travel through life. And here are some insightful quotes from inspiring people 😀💚
And yes, sometimes, it is acrobatics!!
But, who can capture the spirit of the festival better than the Master himself? PC: R K Laxman's the common man
